Welcome to PurLec Hydroculture UK

In many parts of the world including Europe, Canada and the USA. Hydroculture is widely recognized as the preferred method for growing house plants. Hydroculture is easy to do and makes plant care simplicity itself. Plants are healthier and require less maintenance than plants grown in soil or compost.
Hydroculture using PurLec Pots which have an integral water meter makes the job even easier and they are now available direct from the UK.
The system removes the guesswork from watering and ensures that the plant has an adequate supply of nutrients. Over and under watering are far and away the most common reasons for house plant failures. Without water, a plant will die but give it too much water and it will become waterlogged – preventing oxygen from reaching the roots which will also lead to its death. With hydroculture and PurLec Pots these problems can be a thing of the past
Hydroculture – which is sometimes called hydro-culture, hydroponic culture or passive hydroponics is a very simple hydroponic system. It does not need pumps and pipes, irrigation systems etc. so is ideal for use in the home.

At the heart of the PurLec hydroculture system is the PurLec Pot. It consists of three parts – inner and outer pots and a water level indicator. This is a small discreet device that looks like a thermometer and enables you to see at a glance if the pot needs more water.
The outer pot is not only decorative. It holds the water supply in which the inner pot will sit and its high sides reduce water loss through evaporation and prevent light reaching the water surface which lowers the risk of algae formation. The inner pot is specially designed with slots to allow the water in and it is designed to hold the water level indicator. It is filled with an inert planting medium – usually special clay pebbles which are very light and capable of absorbing large amounts of water. At the same time the gaps between the pebbles allow plenty of air (and oxygen) to reach the plant roots.
Capillary action draws the water up into the pebbles – ensuring that the plant has an adequate supply of water without becoming waterlogged.
When potting up the plant PurLec nutrient is added to the clay pebbles. Minerals are released very slowly from the nutrient into the water so that the plants receive an adequate supply of water, nutrient and oxygen.
Hydroculture with PurLec Pots has many advantages particularly when used in the home or office.:-

  • Pots are much lighter than those filled with soil or compost – easier to move around.
  • The planting media used in hydroculture does not harbour pests and disease in the same way that soil does. Nor does it carry fungal spores – this could be a benefit to people with allergies.
  • It is cleaner than soil – accidental spillages are easier to clean.
  • Watering and feeding are easier to control – fewer failures.
  • Plants grow more quickly and generally perform better.
  • Hydroculture can be used for all kinds of plants – chillies and herbs as well as house plants.
